For the last year, I have been building outfits around my beloved Levi’s jacket. If my weather app says it will be a little nippy: I grab it. If I don’t want to carry a handbag and instead use the jacket’s inside pockets to store my phone and wallet: I grab it. If I don’t feel like wearing a bra to go inside Walmart at midnight (or any other time of day or night): I grab it. If I want my look to appear as effortless and unfussy as possible … you guessed it: I grab it.

While I was getting dressed earlier, I realized that I wore a variation of this outfit last week. Although I had on a different top and shoes, the formula was relatively the same. For a moment, I felt a sense of shame. Why can’t I devote more time to building more outfits around other pieces (re: outwear)? Did I buy them to decorate my closets and drawers? But I dismissed those questions as quickly as I conjured them. Why? Because no one (re: me and you, your mama and your cousin, too) has the time to reinvent the wheel with outfits every time they step on the scene. No one.

A demin jacket is something everyone should have to a) make their life easier, and b) to make getting dressed easier. For me, repetition is comforting. I eat the same breakfast of greek yogurt with frozen berries everyday because it nourishes me and gives me the energy I need to clap back to passive aggressive emails with as much sarcasm and sharp wit as they deserve. Repeatedly wearing this jacket, no matter what I wear it with, makes me feel safe with how I present myself to the world and how I feel within. So I’ll be in this thing until the final threads holding it together part ways. Sadly, it’s about time that I retire it for the summer because the days of sweltering desert heat are just around the riverbed.

What I’m wearing:
+ a vintage Levi’s jacket, size XL
+ Puma x Rihanna Creeper, size 8.5 (US)
+ Madewell Emmett Wide-leg Cropped Pants, size 30
